My Journey

My background...

I always loved school. It was a place where I made life-long friends and learned fascinating things about the world I lived in. Most of all I loved the art of discovery. This was most evident in my math classes. My love affair with mathematics started in ernest when I entered Grade 10. My formal education in math ended with a B.Sc. in Honours Mathematics, and my love continued. For my day job, I entered the world of IT.

Early in my career I was offered the opportunity to become a member of a team at a large pulp and paper mill on the west coast of Canada. The team was on the hunt for a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS). I was their technical advisor. It was then that I fell in love with the men and women who maintained the fast-moving rolling equipment that made pulp and paper. They were incredible problem solvers, dedicated to keeping the mill up-and-running 24 X 7.

From that point on and inspired by my passion to make a contribution, my career focused on maintenance, reliability, and then asset management. I loved the proximity to the shop floor, the source of production and revenue. My mathematical mind drew me towards the rigour I found in Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM), Root Cause Analysis (RCA), Kaplan and Norton's Balanced Scorecard and Strategy Execution, and certain Business Process Management (BPM) methods.

I mastered these disciplines during my years as a management consultant. Aware of my growing knowledge, I began to document and categorize what I was learning in a starter kit named the Reliability Improvement Starter Kit® using Microsoft Office tools. This approach was helpful, but too limiting. Worse, when consulting gigs came to an end, the deliverables were handed off in these tools. In truth, the deliverables were in an e-binder that was not visible, difficult to reference, and never changed or improved.

I knew I needed a database for my starter kit. It was getting too big for me. I wanted to create a reusable solution that would be sustainable for the customer.

Thus began my journey as a product developer that became a solution = rich content powered by technology.

It all started when...

I wanted the deliverables from my consulting gigs in asset management to become a living management system for my customers. They needed visibility into their business, a day-to-day reference for their users, and a way to standardize the way work was done. I wanted to leave them with a living Digital Twin of the Organization; at least 80% out of the box, a minimum of 20% configuration with zero customization. They could use it, improve it, and change it.

Acceleration, agility, standardization, and top-down and end-to-end integrity were my goals. I partnered with QualiWare, a Danish vendor with a powerful, flexible BPM and EA tool. [That translates into Business Process Management and Enterprise Architecture.] QualiWare's CEO realized they had to do business differently. He saw an opportunity to offer business solutions powered by QualiWare's tools. FORTIG fit the bill.

I transferred my knowledge and mastery into QualiWare and embedded the Reliability Improvement Starter Kit® in QualiWare's tool set. The solution is named FORTIG. It's is a management-system-for-asset-management. More than that, it's a living Digital Twin. It's purpose is to assist asset-intensive organizations realize value from the mission-critical physical assets that are the heartbeat of their business and their source of revenue. That's one of the main objectives of ISO 55000, the new standard for Asset Management. FORTIG is also ISO 55000's digital twin. Check out FAQs for more information.

FORTIG is all about acceleration => acceleration to develop a management system, acceleration to solve critical asset-centric business problems, acceleration to become ISO 55000 compliant, acceleration to be the best you can be as an asset-intensive organization.

If you have a niggling problem in operations that keeps you up at night...

...it's very likely that the problem relates in some way to your organization's physical assets.

Using FORTIG's rigorous methodology, together we'll find the root cause of the problem. Once we know the root cause, we'll create an actionable plan and business case designed to drive out the defects, eliminate the root cause, and solve your problem.

I had a recent instance where Asset Management got personal. I applied FORTIG's principles and methodology to solve the problem. Check out my journey with my oil tank!
